Shalom,

Midrasha classes will begin on Wednesday,  October 17, 2007  at Congregation Agudat Achim, with Aruchat Kehillah, Communal Dinner, catered by Ellie Shanz, from 6:00pm -6:25pm and classes from  6:30pm-8:00pm.  We have an all-new Core Course, Searching for God developed for us by Marci Galinkin, a creative and experienced Jewish educator.

Choose an elective of your choice from a wide range of historical, ethical, spiritual and cultural courses, many of which are new this year.  While we will not have Israeli shlichim teaching full time this year, the visiting shlichim will join us when they are with JERNY in Albany.

Additonal opportunities for learning and service:

à    The Lindsey Baron Teen Leadership Program of Jewish Family Services returns for two quarters on Wednesday nights and a whole year of service opportunities.  The program is a unique opportunity for teens to come together to learn about taking care of our community - Tikkun Olam.  The students will study Wednesday nights with their instructor, provided by Jewish Family Services, the importance of giving, Tzedekah, in a meaningful way, Chesed - from the heart, to make our world a better place.  Mitzvot, within the community, will be performed by the students on Sunday afternoons.  After training sessions, accompanied by their instructor, students will volunteer their time to visit populations in need, such as:  nursing home residents, rehabilitation residents (children and adults), Ronald McDonald House.  Students will attend two service programs during their quarter.  All students who have previously participated in the program are eligible to take part in the service programs, which count for Community Service Hours in high school.  Sign up in this registration form.
à    ROAR literacy program, Nisky High School students tutoring elementary students in reading, will conduct sign-ups at the Niskayuna HS this fall.  The program is coordinated by Ellen Zirin through Midrasha, and will begin on October 18th at Paige and October 22nd at Zoller.  There is still time to sign up for the Fall or Spring or both!  The tutors make an incredible difference in the lives of the young elementary students who eagerly anticipate their visits each week.  This program also provides Community Service Hours and contributes to a Midrasha Diploma for post Confirmation students.  Sign up on this registration form or email Lee Brice lbrice@cgoh.org directly.

à    Panim will again be bringing teens to Washington DC for Social Justice learning and advocacy during the February break. This is a competitive application process. Please inform Lee Brice or your Rabbi of your interest in participating.

Schenectady Midrasha

Covenant for Learning – Brit Limmud

The Schenectady Area Midrasha is firmly committed to providing a positive learning climate in which all our students can thrive.  Effective learning results when rules of conduct are followed.  This means that:

Ø       Students have a responsibility to encourage positive attitudes toward study and behavior.

Ø       Parents have a responsibility to encourage positive attitudes toward study and behavior.

Ø       Teachers have a responsibility to develop and encourage positive behavior through teaching and discipline in the classroom.

Ø       The administration and the Midrasha Board chair have a responsibility to support and maintain the enforcement of discipline within the school.

Positive behavior will be discussed, encouraged, and reinforced in each classroom.  Students, parents, and teachers must be clear about appropriate behavior, which includes the following:

Ø       Speak and behave respectfully toward others

Ø       Follow directions

Ø       Stay in your seat

Ø       Be in class on time

Ø       Maintain positive attitude

Ø       Remain in the building

The Principal will support positive student behavior and maintain effective discipline within the school through regular observation and consultation with the teachers, students and parents to identify and resolve problems that affect a student’s learning or participation in the classroom or activities.

If a student violates this established brit limmud, corrective action with discretion and good judgment will be taken by the teacher and the Principal in the following manner:

1.   The teacher will remind the student of the rules.

2.         If inappropriate behavior persists, the student will be asked to leave the class and meet with the Principal to develop a plan for appropriate behavior. The parents will be informed and their input solicited.  The expectation is the student will return to class as a productive and positive member of the class.

3.         If inappropriate behavior continues, the student will be asked to leave the class and complete the class work with the Principal.  A conference will be held with the parents to determine what resources are needed for the student to be productive and positive in class.  Parents may be required to accompany their child to class and remain in the classroom. Parents will be notified in writing.

4.   In the unlikely event that the problem persists, the Principal and the Midrasha Board, in consultation with the Rabbis, will have the option to pursue indefinite suspension.  Parents will be notified in writing.

If a student violates the brit limmud in such a manner that the student is dangerous to himself/herself, others, or destroying property, the child’s actions will be immediately reviewed with the parents.  The Principal, Rabbi and Midrasha Board chair will determine, with the parents, under what conditions, if any, the child can continue participation in the school, or if the student is expelled from the school.
